J. Dilla: Still Shining

The exceptional documentary film "Still Shining" directed by Brian Atkins celebrates J. Dilla's legacy. The footage, filmed at the time of the funeral, reveals Dilla's dedication to his craft and loved ones and collaborators' appreciation and awe. I particurlarly enjoyed ?uestLove's take on Dilla's musical phases and the portion comparing J.Dilla as a producer and as a MC.

Dilla's mother sets the tone with these words:

This was his wish during his illness, that he be able to give his gift to the world. He was able to live long enough to give the gift back and it will last a lifetime.

Below is J. Dilla's Love(A thing of the past) which samples Patrice Rushen's Before the Dawn. A song that Dilla probably heard for the first time as a kid in the company of his mom.

Storytellers: Murs and Slug

It's hard to believe this is the first time I do an Atmosphere/Felt post. Fun facts: Murs' real name is Nick Carter and his rap name is an acronym with multiple meanings such as "Making Underground Raw Shit."

Murs and Slug are underrated story tellers. They rap about daily struggles, loved ones and their respective hometowns of LA(Murs) and Minneapolis(Slug). Just listen to these tracks.

Swollen Members: In For the Kill

Vancouver natives, Swollen Members, remix La Roux's In for the Kill. I've read that it will be the first track on their upcoming album "Daggermouth." I've also read that it won't be featured on the album.

This remix is stellar and brings me back to college days of listening to Swollen Member's "Balance" and "Bad Dreams."

Two Dope Boyz, Two Dope Remixes

The Polish Ambassador brings us two dope remixes of Outkast's Wheels of Steel. They're both catchy, one has the bass thumping and the other is 7 minutes long and trancey. Neither sound like the original. The man responsible for these remixes puts it best:

It's only natural that outkast get up in the remix action. These are some of the more innovative cats in the spotlight today, but you already know that. Always impressed with what they bring to the table, which is why they get "the royal treatment." That sounded sexual. Here's the remix of Wheels of Steel.
